What ECE course options do you have?
An ECE educator course will prepare you with the knowledge and skills you need for a career in licensed childcare settings such as preschools and daycares. You can earn many levels of ECE, starting from an ECE Assistant to a full diploma program.
Here are some programs and classes you may be interested in (ordered by program duration):
- ECE Assistant Program (5 weeks). This is the shortest program you can take and will prepare you to work as an assistant in childcare settings. You’ll get to choose one of three elective specialties in this program (Health, Safety, & Nutrition; Child Development 1; or Guiding Behaviour).
- Learning English with Children (LEC) (13 weeks). In this program, you’ll specialize in developmentally appropriate strategies for helping children in language development.
- ECE Infant and Toddler Program (24.5 weeks). In this 5-month program, you’ll learn how to successfully work at the infant and toddler levels. This program also includes a 235-hour practicum.
- ECE Certificate Program (52 weeks). This popular program includes 480 classroom hours and 434 practicum hours to prepare you for working in early learning programs.
- ECE Diploma (80 weeks). This is our most comprehensive program for future ECEs. It includes 923 classroom hours and 669 practicum hours. Once graduated from the program, you can apply for a License to Practice in ECE at the Infant/Toddler level.
At Capital College, our ECE courses are approved by the registrar of the Private Training Institutions Branch (PTIB) of the Ministry of Advanced Education, Skills & Training.
What will you learn in an ECE diploma program?
Not all ECE teacher programs are the same. Look for one that includes a mix of practical classroom learning and practicum placements for experience.
Here are some skills and knowledge you can expect to learn throughout your ECE journey:
- Child development
- Health and Safety

You will learn more about these topics through lectures (virtual classes or in-classroom learning). Apply and practice what you learned through work placement opportunities.
ECE teachers will also be able to develop essential soft skills necessary for a successful ECE career, including communication, empathy, and problem-solving.

In-demand careers as an ECE
More and more parents are understanding the benefits of childcare opportunities and finding quality early learning schools for toddlers and preschoolers. As such, the demand for childcare and early education is growing. With your ECE diploma, you can play an essential role in this in-demand career path.
In British Columbia, you can earn upwards of $22-29 per hour as an ECE. This is par or above the living wage for many regions of the province. Some of this is due to the Early Childhood Educator Wage Enhancement. As an ECE working in eligible licensed child care facilities, this program provides a $6 per hour wage enhancement.
Once you graduate with your diploma, you can start looking for employment. There are many places to find work as an ECE in BC, including:
- Asking your career counselors about job placement services
- Attending local career fairs to meet with employers
- Networking with others in early learning and family services
- Talking to a business advisor about starting or buying an early-learning school
